Life and Times, Where We get #HELLAGAY With You All!
27/6/2017 Comments My Top 5 Fandoms and ShipsShips are, now and always, forever
I'm a big fan of fanfiction and fanart, especially with their rising quality over at AO3, Twitter, Tumblr, Facebook, wherever! But which ones do I hold dear to my heart? Which ones are always on my mind? This list shows off my top 5 fandoms, but in no particular order.
Remember, these are fandoms, and thus these ships are not NECESSARILY canon in the actual storyline. In fact, they take huge liberties for the departure from the canon. But that doesn't make them any less worthwhile. Not a fan of reading? Listen to me rant about it in my Youtube video!
But you can always read my rant below. Now let's get on to the countdown!
5) McHanzo (Jesse Mccree and hanzo shimada)
With little to go on regarding relationships, it was a surprise for some to see McHanzo blow up into the size it is today. They are arguably the most popular ship in the Overwatch fandom. These two appeal to gays on a primal level: the sharp-shooting, silver-tongued cowboy and the stern and cold Japanese samurai. Fan the flames and let this ship burn across the sea, baby!
Overwatch has a fairly small cast, and thus various ships are made. But this ship is one of the first I encountered and I found myself in love with the two. The fanworks add fuel to the fire, some written with such detail and quality that I wished there was a movie about them. Or an animation. One particular story, Hang the Fool, rocked the fandom with its quality, despite the developing story of the game. Take my money and soul, internet! Make it happen! 4) Cullen x male inquisitor (Trevelyan)
Stepping into Dragon Age territory, specifically Inquisition, I'm all for the stern ex-Templar, now-Commander flirting with a charismatic Inquisitor. I honestly loved his design since the second Dragon Age. I didn't think his character was too shelled out in it, though; his story was more noteworthy in the first Dragon Age. And when Inquisition came along, well, I felt conflicted, especially with the straight-Cullen set-up. I personally just applied the bi-Cullen mod just for my own peace of mind, and if my PC could handle playing the game AND recording it, well, I would have probably done the voice-acting for some of Male Inquisitor Trevelyan myself.
Fanfiction ranges from orgies with Dorian and Bull to absolute fluff and alternate universes. I'm all for Bi-Cullen. Cullen Rutherford has been a fan thing since the first Dragon Age, though not as prominent. With his new look, though, he's risen to some of the hottest video game characters in Dragon Age. My favorite story so far is "Share Your Silence", cleverly written and with a polyamorous romance to boot. Click here to read it! 3) JayTIm (Jason Todd/Tim Drake)
Batcest is the common descriptor here, but technically, they aren't blood brothers. It's like getting it on with your stepbrother, which is better. Maybe. I think. It's more moral?
Look, I just like the concept of these two. Ships and fandoms don't NECESSARILy have to make sense, but I'm glad fanfics help justify it for me. They're just... well, the thing with fans is that they can blow mutual respect out of proportion and I just fell into the pit with them. The fanart is just as good, and please, consider this logic: Tim has known Jason before Jason even knew about him. He admired the Bat family from afar before Jason's tragedy. So the drama behind Jason coming back from the dead and meeting and trying to kill his replacement is just JUICY. I personally love the ship. It gets me going. It is elegant and beautiful and I wouldn't trade it for the world. Also, Tim as Stray in an Alternate Universe where he is taken in by Selina Kyle is all kinds of fun. Wanna know more about the verse? Read Stray Cat Strut! 2) STUCKONY (Steve Rogers/Tony Stark/Bucky Barnes)
"Captain America" Steve Rogers and "Iron Man" Tony Stark have had a pretty good relationship since the dawn of Marvel Comics. Their dynamic is one of the arguably most-synergized ever seen, at least until Civil War, which I might be in denial about. These two alone make the ship "Stony".
But what about throwing in that long-time best friend? Well, you have James "Bucky" Buchanan Barnes, so you get "Stuckony" The three have a certain dynamic with each other the fandom focuses on, and they became one of the most prominent non-canon polyamorous ships in history (of Tumblr?). Many depict them as they are, superheroes. Many take off from the many spin-off games, TV series, cartoons, and etc. But a lot have taken liberties to writing their own stories about them. THIS is where it gets juicy. The written works for Stuckony are so well-written, they may as well be their own novels, and they are so good they are the reason I stuck to fanfiction for so long. It is that good. 1) STEREK (Stiles Stilinski/Derek Hale)
The beauty of Stiles Stilinski and Derek Hale is not just in how their apparent chemistry on-screen goes from mutual respect (or sass) to full-blown sexual tension, but also in how the fandom analyzes every minor detail to equate it to LOVE!
And it is a GLORIOUS MASTERPIECE, I LOVE IT! The show even went to lengths to exploit it by getting votes from teens at a particular awards show. And let's face it, the two suit each other. Plus, it doesn't help that the on-screen and off-screen chemistry between Tyler Hoechlin and Dylan O'Brien is so magnificent I'd cream my pants as a gay man imagining what else they did together. Sure, the ship sunk CANONICALLY when the newer seasons pushed, but it remains one of the most prominent ships in Tumblr, probably in American History. It has boatloads of fanfictions, fanart, homages, canon divergences, and more! One of my favorite classics is Stilinski's Home for Wayward Wolves. It is canon divergence but so, SO good.
What about you? What ships and fandoms do you follow? And why do you think they're so great?
